ERASMUS : un semestre “à l’anglo-saxonne”

J’ai longtemps voulu réaliser un semestre de mes études à l’étranger. Dès la licence je m’imaginais voyager, apprendre une nouvelle langue et tenter l’aventure de tout recommencer dans un endroit inconnu. Cette chance m’a été donnée pour le second semestre de ma deuxième année de master en Ingénierie éditoriale et communication à Cergy-Pontoise.

J’étais plus que motivée à étudier dans une école étrangère mais partir loin de tout ce qu’on connaît est, par bien des aspects, effrayant.

Plus de famille, plus d’habitudes, plus de repères temporels et géographiques, plus d’amis, des moyens de communication difficiles quand ce n’est pas notre langue maternelle.

J’ai appris à trouver de nouveaux repères et de nouvelles accroches. Cela peut sembler rudimentaire mais partir en Erasmus, c’était avant tout reconstruire un cadre stable de vie avant de pouvoir s’investir plus avant.

La formule d’Erasmus permet d’avoir le choix. J’ai fixé ma destination : pour moi, ce sera Londres.

Cette capitale fait beaucoup rêver. C’était une ville que je connaissais mal et j’étais contente de pouvoir la découvrir.

Faire ce semestre à l’étranger remplissait plusieurs objectifs : c’était en premier lieu un défi personnel. Je voulais me mettre en difficulté et voir comment je m’en sortais. C’était aussi la volonté d’améliorer ma maîtrise de l’anglais. D’où le choix de Londres. Pour cela, j’ai décidé d’être en immersion complète : pour m’améliorer, une seule solution, je devais parler tout le temps anglais.

Comme je le disais, on m’a laissé le choix. J’ai voulu me mettre en colocation. L’idée était de m’obliger à parler anglais lorsque j’étais à l’université avec mes camarades, de parler avec mes colocataires lorsque j’étais chez moi, de parler avec mes collègues pendant mon temps libre en trouvant un travail. De parler, tout le temps, parler.

La première semaine a été assez difficile : c’est le temps des premières découvertes, des premières surprises (bonnes ou mauvaises), c’est le moment où on réalise que l’on est étranger.

Et quand on est étranger dans un pays dont on connaît mal les us et coutumes (oui, même dans un pays de “culture occidentale”), ce qui aide c’est la gentillesse des gens.

Les londoniens que j’ai rencontré ont été d’une prévenance extrême et d’une empathie qui rassure. Le référent Erasmus de Londres, Alfie Jackson et les responsables du master Publishing – en particulier Frania Hall – m’ont accueilli chaleureusement et je les en remercie.

Mon semestre d’échange s’est déroulé au London College of Communication (LCC) qui appartient à l’University of the Arts London (UAL). Le campus se situe dans le quartier d’Elephant and Castle, dans le 1er arrondissement du centre londonien.

Ce qui m’a interpellé lors de mon arrivée était les différences entre l’université à la française et l’université anglo-saxonne. L’être humain est ainsi fait qu’il remarque d’abord ce qui est différent de ce qu’il connaît. Et voilà ce que je peux en dire.

Je suis arrivée 2 jours avant ma rentrée officielle afin que l’on me remette les papiers nécessaires pour étudier. Mon référent Erasmus m’a remis ma carte étudiante. Cette carte doit être badgée pour entrer et sortir de l’université. Impossible sans cela d’accéder aux salles de cours.
Une fois à l’intérieur, je découvre que de nombreuses salles sont dédiées au design. Evidemment il n’y a pas que les cours du master Publishing à l’intérieur mais tout semble s’axer sur la pratique, la réalisation manuelle. Et mes premiers cours me le confirment.
Une des élèves me fait visiter le premier jour la “print room”. Il s’agit en fait de plusieurs salles, immenses, où sont mises à disposition des machines dignes d’une véritable imprimerie.
Tout est à disposition des étudiants bien qu’il y ait des responsables dans les salles pour nous aider à les utiliser.

Le premier cours que j’ai s’intitule Collaboration Unit. Je dois créer une production papier en groupe de 5 sur un sujet de notre choix. En France, j’aurais réalisé le processus éditorial et envoyé le PDF auprès d’un imprimeur. Ici, c’est à moi de l’imprimer. Les machines, le papier, l’encre tout est là. La différence qui m’apparaît est que l’université anglo-saxonne se concentre davantage sur des projets concrets. Ce n’est ni mieux, ni moins bien, juste différent. Les workshop sont mis en avant, l’investissement dans des projets extrascolaires aussi, les défenses idéologiques également. Les « défenses idéologiques » se font dans un séminaire séminaire où on nous a proposé de participer au développement de la communication/édition de différentes associations. Chacune de ces associations défendaient une cause particulière : protection des animaux, aide aux migrants, projet photographique pour la défense du droit des femmes, protestation contre la peine de mort dans certains états de l’Amérique du Nord, etc. Sur la base du bénévolat, nous pouvions choisir d’aider l’une de ces associations, le plus souvent dans le pôle journalistique ou communicationnel. On encourage ainsi les élèves à s’impliquer dans les projets qui doivent servir à trouver un travail à la fin de l’année. Cette réalité est très présente dans les esprits.

L’ouvrage fini, Arboretum

Le groupe auquel j’appartiens a choisi de créer un livre sur les arbres. L’ouvrage porte sur des arbres singuliers, choisis parce qu’ils présentaient une caractéristique scientifique, historique, symbolique, mythologique, ou botanique particulière. Je suis en charge du design du livre même si nous partageons plusieurs tâches en commun. Nous avons 10 semaines pour réaliser ce livre de A à Z.

Le second projet est davantage axé sur l’innovation. Je dois créer une application originale. Nous travaillons de nouveau en groupe (je suis personnellement en charge de la prospection commerciale et des moyens de financements). Nous devons inventer un support éditorial digital qui soit utile, nouveau, et réel. Nous devons donc concevoir cette application de telle sorte qu’elle puisse exister demain. A la fin du projet, il ne me reste qu’à donner l’ensemble du dossier de conception au technicien : et l’application prend vie !

Du projet à l’application

J’ai également participé à l’organisation de la conférence annuelle du MA Publishing. La conférence sur l’innovation dans le secteur de l’édition se tient tous les ans en avril. Les étudiants de la promotion en cours sont chargés de concevoir le thème et d’organiser l’évènement. J’étais en charge de l’aspect marketing du projet, de la conception du site web à l’animation des réseaux sociaux, en passant par la promotion de l’évènement auprès des invités…

La promotion à laquelle je me suis intégrée était très agréable. Parmi eux, plusieurs n’avaient pas l’anglais pour langue maternelle, ce qui permet de rencontrer des personnes très différentes culturellement. Leur compagnie était très enrichissante et stimulante, notamment sur nos modes de pensée qui se complétaient à merveille.

Je ne peux qu’encourager les futurs étudiants à tenter l’expérience ; et, même si vous n’êtes pas fan de Londres, rappelez-vous : you can’t judge a book by its cover.
