La bibliothèque numérique européenne Europeana, rivale de l’américain Google Books, a fait peau neuve en novembre afin de répondre aux nouvelles exigences de ses usagers.
Pour son directeur général directeur Jill Cousins, Europeana se doit d’« encourager les personnes à utiliser les contenus tombés dans le domaine public pour leur travail, leurs devoirs scolaires etc. » Ainsi, une nouvelle interface, à la fois plus interactive et au graphisme amélioré, a été créée, proposant des fonctionnalités adaptées au iPads et autres tablettes pour satisfaire ses nouveaux utilisateurs.
D’autres améliorations intéressantes ont été apportées récemment à Europeana en plus de l’interface pour rendre son usage simple et attirant. Il est ainsi possible de traduire instantanément un document en 37 langues, blogs et réseaux sociaux sont aussi mis en avant, ou encore de nouvelles clés pour faire des recherches plus précises.

Un projet hors norme
Europeana est en ligne depuis 2008 et offre un accès cohérents aux contenus numérisés des plus grandes bibliothèques, archives et musées d’Europe. Les œuvres numérisées sont à la fois des photos, tableaux, des vidéos, des sons, des livres et des textes etc. Les États participants au projet s’engagent à numériser leur patrimoine conservé de manière traditionnelle afin de le rendre accessible en ligne et disponible pour les générations futures. 1 500 institutions participent déjà au projet comme la British Library, le Louvre ou encore le Rijksmuseum à Amsterdam.
Europeana a également dépassé en fin d’année les 20 millions de documents référencés sur son site. En outre, 500 000 documents appartiennent déjà au domaine public et sont donc libres de droit. La Commission européenne a par ailleurs demandé à Europeana de renforcer ses efforts pour que 30 millions de documents soient accessibles à l’horizon 2015, un plan ambitieux. Au total près de 100 milliards d’euros doivent être investis dans cette bibliothèque numérique par les pays membres de l’Union Européenne.
