Quel est le rapport qu’entretient l’éditeur avec l’actualité ? Quelles différentes possibilités a-t-il quant à son exploitation ? Sans cesse conscient du contexte politique, culturel ou philosophique qui est le sien, l’éditeur se doit de porter attention à l’actualité de manière à coller au mieux aux tendances. En cela, et compte tenu des délais qui sont les siens, l’éditeur est un journaliste comme les autres.

Grande question s’il en est, inhérente au merveilleux métier d’éditeur et torturant nos jeunes esprit de presque professionnels : que va-t-on bien pouvoir publier ?

« J’avais pour mission de surveiller l’actualité de plusieurs manières.

Il y a des grands anniversaires pour lesquelles on peut être sûrs que toutes les maisons d’édition vont sortir un livre. Exemple : le centenaire de la guerre de 14, toutes les maisons ayant un secteur histoire vont faire paraître leur livre. En un sens, c’est un livre qui va coller à l’actu de 2014, mais ça se prépare en amont.

J’ai aussi eu pour mission de recenser les fiches Wikipedia des années 1913, 1923, pour voir s’il n’y avait pas d’autres dates anniversaires prévisibles. Dans ce cas là, les dates sont moins évidentes que pour la guerre de 14, et j’avais l’impression que c’était plus un moyen d’avoir des idées de réserve.

Pendant que j’étais en stage, il y a eu un troisième cas : après Fukushima, mon maître de stage m’a demandé de regarder du côté des livres déjà publiés aux USA ou en Angleterre. L’idée, c’était de pouvoir faire rapidement traduire un livre, pour pouvoir coller à peu près avec l’actu.

Mon maître de stage m’avait présenté les choses de manière très claire : si on peut faire facilement un livre qui va beaucoup se vendre, et bien on ne va pas se priver. »

L’édition est un secteur commercial

Triste réalité : un éditeur qui ne vend pas de livres est un éditeur mort. S’inspirer de l’actualité pour proposer au lecteur un contenu contextualisé est une chose, sortir du lot en présentant une autre approche de tel ou tel sujet en est une autre, parfois plus efficace quand elle est audacieuse. Par chance, les éditeurs sont des gens créatifs !
