Le vendredi 14 octobre a eu lieu la première masterclass de l’année 2016/2017 à Gennevilliers. Fabien Fernandez et Florie Bodin ont rencontré les élèves du master IEC afin de discuter du métier d’auteur et de sa singularité.

En faisant se mêler la parole d’un auteur-illustrateur à celle d’une éditrice, la masterclass a été riche d’informations et a suscité des questions de la part des étudiants autour du statut actuel de l’auteur.

Présentations

Fabien Fernandez est auteur et illustrateur, il a publié Laponie, voyage polaire, un album sans texte aux Éditions Nomades en 2011. Impliqué dans la défense des droits d’auteur, son engagement est profond et sans concession. Florie Bodin est éditrice indépendante. Ancienne élève du master IEC, elle a fondé les Éditions Nomades avec Lucille Pachot, une autre étudiante. Elles ont choisi de publier des guides de voyage et de promouvoir la littérature graphique pour faire découvrir des villes étrangères et françaises. Leur singularité, elles l’ont trouvée dans la manière dont elles recrutent leurs auteurs : leurs guides sont ainsi écrits par des locaux, manière authentique d’aborder des lieux qui sont étrangers au voyageur.

Une rencontre

En 2011, Florie Bodin était à la recherche d’un illustrateur et la Norvège était le pays invité d’honneur au Salon du Livre cette année-là. Elle a rencontré Fabien Fernandez et conquise par son story-board à la gouache, elle a publié un livre graphique sur ce pays du grand Nord. « dans un livre sans texte, il faut trouver des liens cohérents pour que l’histoire soit lisible dans l’image », précise Fabien Fernandez.

 

Auteur, une profession précaire ?

Le métier d’auteur semble faire face à diverses contraintes et être ainsi caractérisé par une certaine précarité. Nombreux sont ceux et celles qui endossent diverses casquettes. Fabien Fernandez a exposé le projet de La Charte (« La Charte des auteurs et illustrateurs pour la jeunesse ») : cette association regroupe des auteurs et des illustrateurs professionnels qui ont déjà publié au moins un ouvrage. Elle s’engage à défendre les droits d’auteur et propose des outils pour simplifier les démarches administratives de ses membres.

Le rôle de l’éditeur

Florie Bodin a rappelé que l’éditeur se doit aussi de protéger les droits de son auteur. Leurs rôles sont complémentaires et une certaine déontologie est à l’œuvre dans leurs rapports. De plus, il est bon de rappeler que certaines initiatives vont dans le sens des auteurs : nous apprenons que les prêts en bibliothèque rapportent des droits d’auteur. Le prêt est donc une action en faveur du livre !

 

Être auteur aujourd’hui

Depuis quelques années, l’auteur doit se défendre et se représenter. Un auteur-illustrateur comme Fabien Fernandez, vend son livre en dédicace, en étant présent dans les salons, en galerie, en bibliothèque, en animant ou co-animant des ateliers. C’est pourquoi La Charte a instauré un tarif d’intervention à la journée ou à la demi-journée pour les auteurs. A travers les récits de ses interventions, nous comprenons qu’un auteur doit être polyvalent.

Pourtant, Fabien Fernandez reste peu intéressé par l’auto-édition. En tant qu’auteur-illustrateur, il a parlé avec passion de sa profession et nous a incité à replacer au cœur de nos interrogations la notion de solidarité, d’engagement et l’importance des relations humaines. Malgré les difficultés et certains combats à mener, ce sont les rencontres qui font naître le livre et c’est cela que Florie Bodin et Fernand Fernandez ont su nous démontrer avec brio.
