Paris: les étudiants en édition au Pays des merveilles

Cette année encore, une masse d’étudiants cherchant à intégrer un master éditorial va se ruer sur la capitale comme un essaim d’abeilles désespérées face à la pénurie de miel. Mais peut-on encore croire au joli cliché du parisian way of life de l’étudiant bobo  ? Si l’on se fie à la réalité des étudiants en édition, clairement, non. Écornons donc aujourd’hui la vérité.

Une offre de formation géographiquement limitée

Aujourd’hui, bon nombre d’étudiants en lettres se détournent, allez savoir pourquoi, des carrières de l’enseignement qui leur sont communément prédestinées pour aller vers celles de la fabrication et de la commercialisation du livre. Depuis plusieurs années, en effet, beaucoup d’entre eux ont choisi de se consacrer à cette forme de culture, qu’elle soit papier ou numérique.

Malheureusement, encore peu d’universités en France proposent l’enseignement adéquat, et le monde de la formation éditoriale se résume actuellement au combat de David contre Goliath, des « provinces » contre la capitale. Quelques régions tentent tout de même de lutter contre cette hégémonie mais le choix géographique est bien maigre. En effet, si des irréductibles proposent des DUT ou autres diplômes éditoriaux dans le reste de la France, il n’en demeure pas moins qu’il existe un joli pays de l’édition qui s’appelle Paris, où la majorité des éditeurs vivent heureux et emploient le plus d’étudiants.

Leur choix est donc vite fait, et, à moins qu’ils ne préfèrent rester à la maison pour des raisons financières ou familiales, la plupart se résout à « monter à Paris », la bouche en cœur, et la tête pleine d’ambitieuses promesses. Prenons un exemple : dans la classe du M2 IEC de Cergy-Pontoise, 41 % des étudiants viennent de régions autres que l’Île de France pour ce Master, 29 % sont de la région ou ne sont pas venus pour la formation, et 30 % ne se sont pas prononcés. Cependant, en dépit de cet enthousiasme partagé, au pays de l’édition, comme dans tous les pays, on s’amuse, on rit, et on pleure, aussi.

À la croisée des mondes


 Le problème pour tous ces nouveaux venus, est que, outre l’embargo éditorial exercé par la capitale et qui leur promet quelques regards condescendants à l’annonce de leurs origines provinciales, il va leur falloir surmonter plusieurs obstacles pour arriver à faire leur place dans le métier et dans la ville : le manque de logement sur Paris ; le prix des loyers ; la distance entre résidence, Université et éventuellement entreprise, qui va entraîner un budget élevé pour les transports en commun ; la concurrence pour trouver un stage, un apprentissage et a fortiori un travail (seuls 10 000 salariés sont recensés dans le milieu éditorial) ; le coût élevé de la vie, la densité et la personnalité de la population parisienne ; la charge de travail que va nécessiter un master pro éditorial…

On est donc bien loin de l’étudiant bohème qui vit d’amour, de culture et d’eau fraîche, se lève le matin, son béret sur la tête, pour aller chercher en vélo sa baguette de pain à la boulangerie centenaire du coin. Pourquoi ? Parce qu’à Paris, le temps c’est de l’argent, et que de l’argent, l’étudiant n’en a pas !


Pourtant, il faut croire que ces futurs éditeurs sont, soit réellement habités par la vocation mythique du livre, soit masochistes, car tout cela ne semble pas les décourager et ils continuent chaque année, et chaque fois plus nombreux, à venir grossir les rangs des universitaires franciliens.

Et, finalement, même si l’on regrette que cette filière de l’enseignement ne soit pas mieux répartie dans le pays, la promiscuité éditoriale a l’avantage de créer un climat compétitif et de préparer ses étudiants à la concurrence du marché du travail dès la première année du master. Alors, probablement que les vieux clichés survivront quelques années de plus dans les provinces françaises les plus reculées, mais, après tout, l’imaginaire fait partie de la littérature et la désillusion permet à l’enfant que nous sommes tous de devenir adulte.
