Découvrir un métier c’est avant tout découvrir une personne. J’ai rencontré Anne-Sophie Jouanneau au cours d’un stage et c’est tout naturellement qu’elle a accepté de me parler de son parcours professionnel et de son métier de responsable littéraire dans une grande maison d’édition.
« Tout a commencé par un stage… »
Anne-Sophie Jouanneau a fait ses premiers pas dans le monde de l’édition en 1999 au cours d’un stage d’un an, puis d’un CDD d’un an et demi qu’elle a effectué à mi-temps au sein du département Spiritualités des éditions Albin Michel, parallèlement à des études de philosophie. Assistante d’édition auprès de Jean Mouttapa et de Marc de Smedt, éditeurs-directeurs du département Spiritualités, Anne-Sophie Jouanneau s’occupait alors en particulier de la collection « Carnets du calligraphe », une collection de livres poétiques illustrés. Ces ouvrages demandent une grande implication éditoriale par le travail conjoint sur le texte et l’image. Elle rédigeait également des notes de lectures, argumentaires et quatrièmes de couverture. A l’issue de ce contrat à durée déterminée, Anne-Sophie a commencé à travailler en free-lance (notes de lecture notamment pour Jean Mouttapa) puis est devenue préparatrice de copie aux Presses Universitaires de France.
En 2006, Anne-Sophie Jouanneau a décroché un CDI et exerce depuis cette date la fonction de responsable littéraire au sein du département Spiritualités chez Albin Michel.
Votre mission si vous l’acceptez : construire des projets éditoriaux
S’occupant principalement des projets d’ouvrages collectifs, sa mission, concrètement, est de construire des projets éditoriaux. Elle est entourée d’auteurs et de collaborateurs à qui elle commande des textes en vue de construire un livre. Pour garantir l’unité du livre, appréhendé comme un tout et non comme une succession d’articles indépendants (comme cela peut être le cas pour un ouvrage universitaire), elle doit veiller à faire des demandes précises. Après avoir pris contact avec des auteurs spécialisés dans le domaine choisi, c’est elle qui négocie la date de remise des manuscrits, le nombre de signe, etc. et prépare les contrats. Comme elle est la seule à avoir un point de vue global sur le livre en cours de création, le travail de coordination qu’elle effectue entre les différents auteurs et articles est très essentiel : « établir un équilibre entre les différentes contributions pour éviter les répétitions et ne manquer aucun sujet est très important », me confie-t-elle.
Coordination, relationnel… un métier qui touche autant à l’édition qu’à la communication
Chez Albin Michel, chacune des étapes de la conception du livre jusqu’à sa fabrication est traitée par un professionnel. La responsable littéraire se met en contact avec un correcteur pour la correction des épreuves, avec les graphistes et l’équipe de fabrication pour établir un devis de l’ouvrage. Elle communique également avec les autres éditeurs de la maison afin de coordonner la politique éditoriale générale, ainsi qu’avec les représentants, les attachés de presse et les responsables promotion. Etant donnée la taille de la maison, ces relations ne sont pas toujours interpersonnelles mais sont assurées via l’écriture de l’argumentaire du livre. Finalement, contrairement à ce que je pensais a priori, la lecture individuelle des textes n’occupe pas l’essentiel de son temps (à peine un tiers). L’activité la plus importante consiste à informer les gens, prendre contact avec les auteurs, monter des projets. L’aspect relationnel du métier de responsable littéraire est fondamental, et ce d’autant plus lorsque l’on travaille sur des œuvres collectives.
Epanouissement intellectuel et frustrations éventuelles ?
Anne-Sophie Jouanneau trouve un épanouissement intellectuel et artistique dans cette activité professionnelle très intéressante. Etablir des relations très privilégiées avec les auteurs, monter des projets, voir et surtout prendre part à leur création, voilà qui est très valorisant et épanouissant. La gestation d’un livre ne suit aucune règle. L’éditeur dépend du bon vouloir de l’auteur. Chaque livre est un cas particulier. Mais on peut dire qu’une fois le texte accepté, on compte au minimum six mois jusqu’à sa mise en vente. D’après le site internet des éditions Albin Michel, le département Spiritualités publie en moyenne 50 livres par an, dont une trentaine de nouveautés et une vingtaine de poche. D’autre part, il y a une réelle part de création par la rédaction des quatrièmes de couverture, le choix du titre et de la couverture de l’ouvrage, etc.
La frustration peut alors être grande lorsque l’ouvrage ne rencontre pas son public. Car il ne faut pas oublier que le livre évolue dans un marché et que l’éditeur est tributaire du succès des ventes. Face à la prolifération du nombre de titres et à la désaffection des lecteurs, la vie des livres est de plus en plus brève.
Pour finir notre entretien, il était temps de parler salaire et carrière. En début de carrière, le salaire mensuel se situe autour d’un minimum de 1500€. A terme, Anne-Sophie Jouanneau voudrait évoluer vers le poste d’éditeur puis vers celui de directeur éditorial. Comme c’est un milieu difficile à pénétrer, elle ne m’a que trop recommandé de continuer
