Table ronde d’auteurs au colloque A quoi sert la littérature ? – Pourquoi et pour qui écrire ?

Le 13 octobre 2017, à l’occasion du colloque international “À quoi sert la littérature ?”, se déroulant à la Maison Internationale de la Recherche de l’Université de Cergy-Pontoise sur le site de Neuville, les étudiants du Master Ingénierie éditoriale et Communication (IEC) ont assisté à une table ronde d’écrivains sur la thématique “Pourquoi et pour qui écrire ?”. Cet entretien littéraire a été mené par Joanna Nowicki et Axel Boursier, en présence des auteurs Rodrigo Blanco Calderon, Louise Lambrichs, Rouja Lazarova et Matei Visniec ainsi que le groupe des étudiants de M2 en charge de l’organisation de ce colloque.

Quelques mots sur les auteurs…

Si ces quatre auteurs ont été invités à prendre part à ce colloque, c’est parce qu’ils ont tous un rapport privilégié avec les mots et avec l’écriture. Matei Visniec, d’origine roumaine, est à la fois écrivain, journaliste, dramaturge et poète. Réfugié politique en France depuis 1987, il est à l’origine d’une quarantaine de créations, qui sont pour lui l’occasion de libérer sa parole. (Pour en savoir plus sur Matéi Visniec)

Rodrigo Blanco Calderon est né au Venezuela et vit désormais à Paris. Auteur de cinq romans et considéré comme un des jeunes écrivains les plus talentueux d’Amérique Latine, il a auparavant donné des cours de théorie de la littérature à l’Université centrale du Venezuela dont il a été diplômé de lettres. Louise Lambrichs, auteure française, a fait de la littérature son domaine de prédilection. Baignée dans les livres grâce à la profession de ses parents, elle a fait des études de philosophie et quelques années dans l’enseignement. Elle est aujourd’hui vice-présidente du comité scientifique du Centre Pierre Cazenave. Parmi ses ouvrages notables, on retrouve Journal d’Hannah (La Petite Bibliothèque de l’Olivier, 2002), première parution en 1992 par l’éditeur Seine, (élu par la rédaction de la revue meilleur livre de l’année).

Rouja Lazarova est une auteure bulgare, vivant à Paris depuis 1991, qui a écrit 5 romans en français. À travers son œuvre, elle explore ses hantises liées aux totalitarismes du XXe siècle, mais elle s’interroge également sur la langue et les enjeux générés par le fait d’écrire dans une autre langue que sa langue natale. Son dernier roman, publié en 2016 aux éditions Intervalles, s’intitule “Le muscle du silence”. (Pour en savoir plus sur Rouja Lazarova)

Les étudiants débutent cette table ronde par la lecture d’un extrait d’un livre de chacun des auteurs présents. Nous sommes ici en présence de quatre auteurs venant de quatre pays différents et avec chacun une pratique et une perception différente de l’écriture.

“À la fin, on est transformé par le processus d’écriture” R. Blanco Calderon

Joanna Nowicki ouvre la discussion avec la question : “Pourquoi écrivez-vous ? Par nécessité ? Par désir de s’exprimer ? Par besoin de faire passer un message ? Pour guérir une souffrance ? Pour attester de soi ? L’écriture devient-elle une arme, une forme d’expression d’une conscience politique ou de contre-culture ?” Les réponses sont très diverses, chaque auteur a sa propre pratique de l’écriture et surtout sa propre histoire personnelle qui est intimement liée à cette dernière. Il y a des milliers de réponses à cette question mais aucune vérité absolue. On peut écrire pour s’exprimer, par pur intérêt pour l’écriture, pour écrire des livres que l’on aimerait lire mais qui n’existent pas…

L’écriture est également un engagement fort, une résistance envers l’oppression intellectuelle et politique. Matéi Visniec nous raconte : “Il y a des réponses complexes à cette question, on pourrait peut-être trouver plus de mille raisons ! Mais la raison la plus urgente d’écrire, quand je vivais en Roumanie, était de participer à une résistance culturelle. La littérature était presque le seul espace de liberté possible pour l’esprit.”

Pour continuer, Axel Boursier propose une autre question : “Quand on écrit, quelle est la place des autres auteurs dans le processus créatif ?”

La question posée interpelle, car ici encore les auteurs ont des avis divergents, chacun a sa propre réponse, ou plutôt des réponses différentes de celles de son voisin. Rodrigo Blanco Calderon nous explique que pour lui, tout commence par des voix. Quand il écrit, il essaye d’établir un dialogue avec les auteurs morts et c’est de cela qu’il se nourrit pour écrire. “À l’origine, l’écriture est un dialogue avec des personnages mais aussi avec les morts. Lorsque j’écris j’essaie d’établir un dialogue avec des auteurs morts qui comptent beaucoup pour moi. » C’est ainsi que R. Blanco Calderon nous raconte comment, petit, il rêvait déjà dans son sommeil de dîner avec Garcia Marquez et d’autres.

Les trois autres auteurs s’expriment principalement sur le fait d’avoir été depuis leur enfance de grands lecteurs ; Rouja Lazarova s’intéresse à ce qu’écrivent d’autres auteurs, car elle est curieuse de voir comment d’autres voient les choses ;  Louise Lambrichs va jusqu’à exprimer son attachement à la lecture en disant : “ça m’a faite.” Matei Visniec va plus loin : étant aussi journaliste, il explique que, quand il écrit, il y a deux personnes qui cohabitent en lui, le journaliste et l’écrivain. L’actualité lui donne des sujets, c’est une source d’inspiration et l’écrivain qui l’habite en fait des histoires.

“La contrainte est-elle un facteur de créativité ?”

Les avis divergent de nouveau entre les auteurs à cette question : pour Louise Lambrichs, la contrainte intérieure efface totalement les contraintes extérieures. Rouja Lazarova transpose cette question de contrainte dans la langue et la culture. Cependant, elle revient sur l’établissement d’un possible lien entre processus créatif et contrainte et déclare : “Je pensais que c’était dans les pays totalitaires que l’imagination se débridait le plus. Je suis revenu sur cette idée. Finalement, pour l’artiste, la contrainte n’apporte rien.” Ainsi même dans l’esprit de l’auteur, de l’esprit créatif cette question pose débat et ne trouve pas de réponse absolue.

Cette table ronde a été l’occasion d’appréhender différents points de vue sur l’écriture et sa pratique à travers le regard de quatre écrivains aux origines et aux parcours très différents. Un débat riche, ponctué d’anecdotes illustrant ce procédé si particulier qu’est la naissance d’un ouvrage.
