La couverture d’un livre est déterminante dans le choix d’un ouvrage. Elle peut aussi l’être lorsque se pose la question d’offrir ou de conserver un livre. Une couverture « qui fait mal aux yeux » n’est pas du plus bel effet quand il s’agit de faire plaisir à un proche… Mais qui fait les couvertures ? Qui décide de ce qui y est représenté ? Qui représente quoi ? … Petit tour du monde des couvertures qui réchauffent la lecture !


Comme sur bien d’autres plans, les anglo-saxons dominent la discipline. Depuis maintenant des décennies, l’art de faire des couvertures de livres attractives n’a plus de secret pour eux. Ils en ont même fait un métier : book designer ! Le travail des plus talentueux de ces professionnels est visible sur leurs sites http://www.book-by-its-cover.com/; http://bookdesigners.com/ ; http://bookcoverarchive.com/)

On s’aperçoit que ces créatifs ne s’imposent aucune limite, si ce n’est celles de la taille de la couverture. Sans quoi, la virtuosité et la créativité sont stupéfiantes. Toujours en accord avec le contenu de l’ouvrage, ces concepteurs artistiques du visuel du livre livrent parfois de véritables œuvres d’art.

En France, rares sont les professionnels travaillant exclusivement sur ce support. On fait souvent appel à des graphistes afin d’élaborer des couvertures, mais leur travail s’inscrit le pus souvent dans une ligne graphique prédéfinie par l’éditeur et son directeur artistique.

C’est en ce qui concerne les ouvrages de littérature que les anglo-saxons sont les plus audacieux. Il suffit de comparer la couverture d’un même titre, traitée par les uns et les autres, pour saisir immédiatement la frilosité des éditeurs français.

En France le traitement iconographique des couvertures de livre est la plupart du temps pris en charge par les éditeurs eux-mêmes, les maquettistes, ou quand il en reste, les iconographes ; mais rares sont les commandes effectuées auprès de vrais créatifs. Les anglo-saxons travaillent également de cette manière, mais lorsqu’ils confient une couverture à un « book designer » se dernier peut se permettre de proposer un travail riche, élaboré et souvent percutant.

Ceci dit cette retenue toute française, nous met à l’abri de certains excès du genre. En effet certaines couvertures anglo-saxonnes pêchent par leur lourdeur, une typographie surchargée, et un trop-plein d’images superposées.

Et si cette attitude n’entraîne pas de fulgurance artistique dans le genre, les professionnels chargés de traiter les couvertures d’ouvrages de littérature respectent l’identité visuelle des collections, ce qui permet au public de s’y retrouver en identifiant d’un coup d’œil les nouveautés d’une collection affectionnée (les « Folio » sont très reconnaissables, la collection « 10/18 » ou les ouvrages « Christian Bourgois » également).
